Stevens Admissions: Vincent

Let it Rageee...

Hey Guys !

    So I never really updated everyone on what was going on with fall elections and everything on campus.  Unfortunately I was not elected to SGA and another fellow classmate won over me by a short margain of 8-6 which was disappointing but I can still run for senator this spring anyways.  As for Gear & Triangle, unfortunately I was not elected to become a member, but I was appointed to the Dean's Activites List, which is almost as good becuase you are still recognized by the School and you are put in our newspaper The Stute.  The other thing I ran for and won was a position on the prestigious Stevens Honor Board.  I still have to pass the entrance test, but that is on Saturday, and so far no one of record has failed it (knock on wood!). 

    This past weekend was two great things here at Stevens.  Our Ethnic Committe (I apoligize 100 times over if I am correct and someone please correct me if I am wrong :) ) held a huge open tent with lots of food and a costume contest and it was a fun time for people who didn't want to go out to the annual Halloween parties hosted by TX and Lodge.  Another fun alternative, which I should have taken advantage of was Trick or Treating hosted by G & T where students get to go around to the professors houses on campus and get candy from them.

    Lastly, something we did participate in was my fraternities tradition of welcoming the lovely ladies Phi Sigma Sigma's new member class into their sorority by our Rose Ceremony with them where each new brother gives each new sister a rose.  While I don't have pictures of that I do have some that made it to BroBible.com a website which had a nationwide halloween costume contest and we are finalists as a house so see the links below!

We have our first wrestling match this Sunday, so that will be my next blog post!  Until next time...

Stevens Entertainment Committee

Hey Guys,

    Sorry it's been awhile, but mid-terms week really hit hard here at Stevens.  Thankfully everyone perservered and we are all into the 2nd half of the fall semester.  As you may or may not know, I am a member of the Varsity Wrestling team.  Since season has started I have not been able to get out as much since I am in the process of transforming my body from 205 lbs to 184 lbs which is my weight class here at Stevens.

    Anyways...for a team bonding event we went into NYC to visit the famous Blood Manor haunted house located at 27th and 10th avenue.  Normall this would cost a pretty penny if you wanted to go by yourself, but thankfully our Entertainment Committee here at Stevens does a great job, and got us $50 tickets and transportation (about $55 in total value) for only $10.  While in my opinion the RIP (VIP) tickets were only worth the $10 that we ended up paying, I just wanted to throw a huge thanks to the EC here at Stevens, because they really helped us have a fun night out as a team with some of our other friends on campus.

    This coming weekend is wrestle-offs so I hope to report on that if you're looking forward to my next post :) Until then...

The Honor Board, SGA, and Gear and Triangle

Hello Everyone,

    It really has been too long since my last blog post.  Anyways I have been really busy as always running around campus trying to get things done as wrestling season just got under way this past Monday, I am actually more organized because I have to be Haha. 

    A couple of the things I have been applying for recently are some of the most important things on campus.  I recently handed in an application to become a member of the Stevens Honor Board, which is a prestigious honor to be selected for as our Honor Code has been running for over 100 years now and we have the oldest such thing for any university. 

    Another application I handed in was for Student Government which is important here at Stevens, because of our small community everyone's voice can truly be heard and as a student you are not just a statistic but someone who contributes to our campus community.

    The last application I turned in was for Gear and Triangle which is a group of upperclassmen who contribute positively to the Stevens community through their involvement in campus events and student organizations.  This group also goes hand in hand with the Dean's Activities Honor List, of which all students regardless of their year at Stevens may apply for.

    I am really hoping that I go 3/3 with these honors and I will have much more to post soon.  My next post will be about my recent adventures as the new Fund-raising Chair and Greek League Quarterback for my Fraternity Beta Theta Pi.  Also, a group of wrestlers on the wrestling team helped support one of the Sororities on campus, Phi Sigma Sigma, in their Fund-raising efforts for a local kidney foundation.

A Taste of Hoboken

Hey Everyone,

I had been planning on writing about the cafeteria we have on campus in the Howe building to let the incoming freshman know what it is like, but I would say that all of you have already experienced our dining hall already so I don't want to waste your time.  Anyways, something you may or may not know, is that your Stevens Duckbills are usable out in Hoboken at some pretty great places to eat besides Gios and Bagels on the Hudson.  There is a complete list of places and you can look up all of them on the duckbills website or the list may have been posted by your RA already.  Also, some places like Qdoba, will give you 10% off if you show your Stevens Id, so it's a pretty awesome thing to take advantage of.

    The second and more interesting part of not choosing to eat at the cafeteria, is if you have cash ready to spend on some pretty quality food, that you cannot pay with duckbills.  While duckbills are very convenient, having cash is the best way to go in my opinion because there is an infinite amount of places to eat in Hoboken.  Two personal favorite places to go with friends or on a date are Tutta Pasta located on 2nd and Washington I believe and Charrito's which is located on 11th and Washington.  Tutta Pasta has great italian food, and I have yet to have better quality food for the price.  Charrito's on the other hand has fine mexican food and it is by far my favorite place to go out to eat when I pay with cash.

    The last little tid-bit of advance (and some I should take myself) is to go out and try new places all over Hoboken.  There is a reason why people love our hometown here and it's because it has great places to enjoy every night of the week for all types of people.  That's it for my blogging about stuff, I'll be sure to share more about Campus Life and what is going on and so forth in my up coming blog hopefully this Wed.  Until then...

Welcome Back

Hey Everyone,

Sorry it has been very long since my last post, but Summer Classes were extremely challenging and I have not had much going on besides studying and taking exams and who wants to read about that?  Anyways, this week at Stevens is Orientation Week and it is one of my favorite weeks at school becuase everyone is excited for the new school year and everyone gets to see all of the friends back together again after a summer away.  I have been on campus so I have seen most of my friends, but for those of you who have not or are incoming freshman this first week of school is great to get back together and enjoy yourselves before classes really get into full swing.

    A note of warning to incoming freshman, there will be plenty of times to go out in these first few weeks and enjoy campus life, Hoboken, and NYC if you get a chance to visit, but don't let classes fall behind because everything you learn in freshman year, you use in the coming years at Stevens.  It is much easier to get ahead and then have a good time versus trying to play catch up for the next couple of years.  Anyways, enjoy all of the orientation festivities and I will be sure to post back after this weekend when I move in this weekend and get settled.

New York Athletic Club

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going to watch and train with the Russian Junior National Wrestling team. They were training at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) in preparation for their upcoming match against a US Junior team this Friday night at the NYAC at 7 pm.  Training with the Russians, who as a country are one of the most powerful wrestling nations in the world and finish very high at the Olympics almost every 4 years, is an honor.  I can say that I am very pleased with the trip and I feel that I am going to be training there much more often in preparation for next year.

As for this coming Father's Day weekend I am very excited to go home this Thursday, since I have no Friday classes :) and spend time with my family.  I think i may be going to Long Beach Island, which if you have not been to the Jersey shore, I definitely recommend going there as it is one of my favorite beaches. Anyways, I am not 100% sure as to what I am doing although I am pretty sure I will get to see some of my friends from home, which is always nice because none of them go to school with me and it is rare that we can all get together as most of us are always busy.

I'll be back on here around Sunday night maybe, or Tuesday afternoon depending on how my schedule turns out.  Until then...

A Hoboken Summer

Hey Everyone, sorry it's been awhile but I am back.  I just wanted to post really quick in between statistics homework and studying for thermodynamics.  I have obviously been incredibly busy this summer with training for wrestling and trying to do well in academics.  I wanted to just say that everyone should experience a Hoboken Summer at one time or another.  The weather is usually warm and the breeze off the Hudson river is refreshing when it is a hot day.  The other day a few friends of mine and myself just sat outside of Qdoba on a nice sunny day and just enjoyed how nice Hoboken can be.  Another part of Hoboken that I feel most Stevens students do not go to enough is the pier down by the path station.  I know it is not a sandy beach but the view is amazing and it is just as much fun as going to the beach in my opinion.

After that we decided to go see the movie The Hangover, which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good comedy and wants to laugh the entire movie.  Hmm...i've hit a mental block so I am going to write again tomorrow.  I am looking forward to going home this coming weekend for Father's Day, and maybe wrestling in a tournament this weekend with my heavyweight.

Summer 2009

Hey Everyone, sorry I have been incredibly busy with the start of Summer and I have not blogged for the past two weeks.  I am living on campus this summer to take classes which is a requirement for the Co-op Program because you work for a semester or two depending on your major and then you take classes for alternating semesters.  That being the case, eventually you will either work in the summer or you will take summer classes.  At Stevens, our summer classes are divided into 2 sessions I and II.  The first session I am taking Thermodynamics and Probability and Statistics and in the second session I am taking Calculus 4 and a Humanities course.  The challenge with summer classes that most students struggle with is the fact that you can not miss any classes since missing one lecture in the summer is like missing a whole week or two during a regular semester during the fall or spring.

Summer living at Stevens is different as just about everyone lives in the River Terrace apartments (in my opinion, the nicest place to live on campus) or their own off campus apartments.  I chose to live in my fraternity house this semester which has been a nice, but great experience for me.  One of the biggest challenges has been the fact that we do not have our own cook for the house like we normally do, so you have to buy and cook all of your own meals.

That is all I have time for right now, but I will be posting soon covering graduation, the co-op interview process, and summer plans...

Beta Ball Weekend

This past weekend was filled with many high's and lows.  Unfortunately it did not start off in the best of fashion, but it ended up being a great weekend regardless.  I came home from work to see our Men's Lacrosse team in a battle with St. John Fisher and although it was raining I made sure to watch until the very end and it was a shame but we lost 15-14 in a great game that was well worth the stay.  The next morning our Women's team also fell to STJF by a score of 16-12, so both of our nationally ranked lacrosse teams would end up missing the NCAA tournament and it was not a good time seeing my friends upset at the end of their runs to a great season. 

After the women's lacrosse game, there was a home run derby on campus sponsored by our Entertainment committee which gave away Yankees or Mets tickets to the winner, a MLB jersey of choice to 2nd place, and a MLB cap of choice to the 3rd place prize winner.  I did not place in the top 3, but I did pitch my friend James to a 3rd place finish and he will have a brand new Boston Red Sox hat thanks to that.  After the home run derby our Entertainment Committee was at it again sponsoring free Five Guys Burgers and Philly Cheesestake's wings while there was a live band, The Casual Acquaintance, in Jacobus Hall.

After the free food and live band it was time to get ready for the main event of the weekend, my formal, Beta Ball.  There was about 80-85 Active and Alumni Betas and their dates in attendance including our District Chief Brian Boardman who I had the pleasure of meeting at our Ball.  The ball was probably the most fun I have ever had out and I have some pictures for your viewing below.  Enjoy!
