Platano: fried plantain; staple dish to many Latin American and Caribbean countries
Collard greens: vegetable; a staple of some culturally Black foods
The Black Student Union and the Latin American Association worked hard this semester to bring the celebrated off-Broadway show to Stevens for everyone to watch for free!
The show was amazing! Insightful, funny, inspirational, and romantic, everyone loved it! The show was held in DeBaun Auditorium, and we had a good turnout!
Here is a description of the show:
"A modern day West-Side story, Platanos y Collard Greens is a romantic comedy of two college students falling in love against their families wishes. Strangers from two different cultures, Black and Latino, these two lovestruck students are forced to overcome prejudice while defending their bond with family and friends. This show will inspire you while making you laugh and think."
I was definitely laughing the whole show! And it brought up provoking topics of race relevant to our society today. I wish the show would have lasted longer, I was enjoying it so much! The cast was genuinely funny and entertaining. Hopefully they'll want to come back again next year!
