Boston!

Over the weekend I took a short bus ride up to Boston, MA to see a friend of mine, and a Stevens Alumn.  She is currently enrolled in her first year of Law School in Boston and she let me stay with her and showed me around the city.  

First stop was the Boston Public LIbrary which was GORGEOUS.  I felt like I was inside a museum rather than a library.

   

After we left the library we went to Haymarket, which is a touristy part of the city.  Haymarket is where Quincy Market is located.  I wanted to walk through the market, and I am so glad that I did because we ran into a group of women from the Stevens Fencing Team!  They were competing at the Sollee Invitational at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  It was great seeing friends from school, and it made me realize how great it is to be at a school where there are so many cool cities nearby that are perfect for weekend trips! 

Carlsbad 5000

Today I ran 'the worlds fastest 5k' in Carlsbad, CA.  It was a HUGE event, and there were actually 7 different 5k events taking place today.  Of those 7, two of them were for the top 25 men and women and were invitation only.  Some of the competitors in those categories were even olympians!  The weather was beautiful and the course was mostly flat.  Couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off April.  (I can't believe that the semester and my co-op term are almost over!!)      

Roller Derby

Apparently Roller Derby is a big thing out here.  This past weekend a friend took me to go see the San Diego Derby Dolls match up against a team from Los Angeles.  It was such a cool expirience.  I didn't know the rules of Roller Derby, so it took some time to get used to - but it was all very cool.  The girls on the teams looked so intense, but it looked like they were having a blast as well.  

It all boiled down to the last 'jam' which is just the last round.  It was a very close match (or as they call them, bouts) and the San Diego home team ended up losing by only a few points. 

It was such a cool expirience to learn about a sport that you rarely hear about on the east coast.  It is such a common thing out here I may just want to give it a try!
