(By the way, I am not crazy for wearing shorts in the winter because I don't do it regularly.  I had just come from working out.)

Big Weekend in Sports & Work Study

This past weekend was a huge weekend in athletics ... and I work-studied for most of it!
(Work Study is a program where individuals get money from the government that is earned by working at your college.)
I work-study in the athletics department.

FRIDAY: The men's and women's basketball teams played a doubleheader against Ithaca.
I work-studied by selling raffle tickets to raise money for athletics.  The raffle I was selling tickets for is towards a wine tasting dinner at a delicious restaurant in Hoboken called Amanda's.

SATURDAY: The wrestling team had their conference championship at home.
I work-studied by helping out the organizers with whatever they needed from running errands to monitoring the gates to make sure spectators didn't cross into the athletes' preparation space.

SUNDAY: The men's and women's basketball teams played a doubleheader against RIT.
I volunteered my time for National Women in Sports Day to run a field hockey clinic.  It is great to teach people about something that I really enjoy!

I like work-studying in athletics because it lets me support the teams and earn some money!

There were some great performances this weekend! Congratulations to all the sports who competed this weekend! I know wrestling, fencing, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, and baseball all competed!

VDAY

... No, NOT Valentine's Day!

Yesterday, the College of Arts & Letters hosted their annual event called Vday in which they perform Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues as well as educate on the violence going on around the world.  It was held in DeBaun Auditorium and was the 10th anniversary of the event held at Stevens.

This was the first time I had gone to this event (surprisingly), and I wish I had gone in the past!  It was very interesting to go to, and I really enjoyed it.  There were different women there who read part of Ensler's play.
Next year if I have time I definitely plan on auditioning to read and perform!

Valentine's Day

Hello all! I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day!

Hopefully by now, the children from the hospital have received and read the cards that we made for them on Tuesday :)

Happy 140th birthday!

This past week Stevens celebrated its 140th birthday!

On Wednesday morning... the day is snowed a lot and classes were canceled... a bunch of students went into NYC to make an appearance on the Early Show.

The day involved getting up at 5:15am in order to get ready, have some food, and be on the bus outside Jonas Hall at 6:00 am.
We cheered, did a duck cheer and stood outside of the studio in the blizzard!
It was really cold, but it was a great opportunity to rep Stevens and the field hockey team!

Sharing the Love

The Stevens community did share the love...

On Tuesday evening, the South Side RA staff organized a community-wide event to make Valentine's Day cards.  The event was held in Pierce Dining hall from 7:30pm to 11pm.

We had a GREAT turnout!

All of the cards made are going to be donated to the Hoboken University Medical Center and given to patients on Valentine's Day!

Being the "point person" for this project and seeing it come to fruition really makes me so happy that we as a Stevens community could do our part and try to make Valentine's Day special for others.

Formal Recruitment

The formal recruitment period for Greek life has just ended.  After a hectic yet fun two weeks, the houses have found their potential new members and those potential new members have found the Greek houses they fit in with best.  On Friday, the bids were given out and on Friday evening the individuals decided to accept or decline the bid.

I'm happy to say that all of the houses on campus got some great people. Congratulations to all of the new members and all of the houses!

... It's weird to think that only a year ago I was a new member beginning the process of becoming a sister!

Ethics Bowl

On Wednesday was the first annual Ethics Bowl at Stevens.
Sponsored by Gear and Triangle, it gave the opportunity for the different majors at Stevens to showcase their ethics.

It was really cool. All the majors were allowed to enter one team of up to five people to represent their major.
I was selected to represent the Mechanical Engineering department!

The Ethics Bowl was kind of like debating but a little different. Each group was presented with a case study that described a situation dealing with different topics such as politics, bioethics, business, engineering, etc. After having time to prepare, the group prepared an argument based on ethical principles to talk about their stance on the issue. The group they were "up against" then prepared a rebuttal which either provided the opposing viewpoint or tried to elaborate and make a better argument. Then, the judges were able to ask questions to either of the teams.

My team made it to the third round of the day, falling to the bracket winner, the Philosophy department. We were up against Biztech first, then Art & Tech, then wound up falling to Philosophy.
We made a valiant effort.

Next Wednesday is the finale. The top two teams from Wednesday as well as two more wild card picks, will be competing for the title of Ethics Bowl champion. All four teams will be getting a cash prize and have the bragging rights to say they made the championship. The first place team will actually be getting a trophy that (I hear) will be placed in the Office of Student Life, after having their department's name engraved on it.
I'm excited to go next week and see what all these groups have to say!

Field Hockey in Baltimore

I spent this past weekend in Baltimore playing in a field hockey tournament.

Let me just clarify that I did NOT play outside! Field hockey is only played outdoors in the collegiate level, but indoor field hockey is very big to the field hockey world.

Indoor is typically played in a roller rink type surface. Instead of there being sidelines, there are wood boards. These wood boards keep the ball in bounds, so it is common strategy to use them to pass up the field or use to force out the attack.

Indoor really helps your outdoor game.  The game is so quick and since the rules are slightly modified, it tremendously improves your game.

Anyways, it was great to play out in Baltimore with other hockey enthusiasts. I was on a team with people who are already done with school but just love the sport and want to play. Their stick skills are incredible! We played well and got to watch some great hockey during our breaks.
