Happy 4th of July!

Hello readers!

Currently I am at my cousin's apartment in West New York, New Jersey.  We'll be watching the fireworks from Port Imperial later today...well tonight technically!

Since the fireworks will be on the Hudson this year instead of East River, we have a FANTASTIC view!
The view from Stevens as well will be awesome.  Stevens students and faculty get it great, because the campus police is limiting the number of people who can watch it from our campus.  If you have a Stevens ID, you can enter campus an hour earlier than other people of the community.  Only 1000 people will be allowed to watch it from campus, so I'm sure it's going to get very packed very quickly.

My sister brought her camera to take pictures, so I'll post any good pictures she takes the next time I blog :)

Fun fact, the change in location for the fireworks is because of Henry Hudson. This year marks the 400th year anniversary since he sailed down the Hudson.

My internship so far!

I first want to apologize. I tend to write about too many random things happening in my life that I neglect to talk about important things like school, work, etc.

Well, this post is going to be ONLY about my internship this summer.

Let me just say that I LOVE IT!  I really took for granted and never realized how important it is to have some work experience under your belt before you're actually out in the workforce.

(Insert duck reference here)... I am actually getting my feet wet and seeing what it's really like to be working.  I now have an idea of what I like and don't like doing.

From what I see so far in the month I've been there, I really enjoy it.  I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where the company expects a lot of their interns and gives us meaningful projects to do that will greatly impact them in the future.

Anyways, with the hour commute to and from work everyday, I'm hearing my fair share of new music.
Current favorite song on the radio: "I Gotta Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas

Systems Engineering

SYS 625

Sys 625 you ask... well, technically the name is Fundamentals of Systems Engineering.  This is my first graduate class and is the foundation of my Graduate degree.

Luckily for me, I came into the class with some experience through the Summer Institute I took last year (it's in last June's blog for those of you who remember it!).

The class is based on identifying the needs, requirements, uses, etc of a stakeholder. In a nutshell, I like to think of it as looking at a system as a whole by trying to address the problems, not focusing on a solution until the end of the process so it doesn't limit the system parameters.

According to the website, SYS 625 "discusses fundamentals of systems engineering. Initial focus is on need identification and problems definition. Thereafter, synthesis, analysis, and evaluation activities during conceptual and preliminary system design phases are discussed and articulated through examples and case studies. Emphasis is placed on enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of deployed systems while concurrently reducing their operation and support costs. Accordingly, course participants are introduced to methods that influence system design and architecture from a long-term operation and support perspective."

Below is a picture of a wiki the group has to make to present data for our final project [regarding the SSE website]. Our wiki has got a lot of other cool stuff too (maybe I'll attach some more pictures in a later post).

Wiki

Fun fact: Our team name is Team Greek because the 4 members of our group are all undergraduate students (concurrently all getting our Master's as well) who are part of a sorority on campus.

The class is over in the beginning of July (Summer Session 1), but we've still got a ways to go to complete our project.

SYS 605

Sys 605 is my first online class for my Master's. It is called Systems Integration. It is another key class for the degree I am hoping to get.

According to the SSE website, the class is "designed to provide students with an understanding of Systems Integration (SI) process, approaches, drivers, tools and techniques required for successful SI, critical success factors, and best practices. The objective of the course is to provide the students an understanding of the issues involved in systems integration. Systems integration process is illustrated over the life cycle concept of projects - during design, development, implementation, testing and production.  Case studies and examples from the Information Technology (IT), aerospace, and defense industries will be used to illustrate the concepts discussed. The students will learn the theory and practice of business process integration, legacy integration, new systems integration, integration of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products, interface control and management, and testing."

Again, I am working on a project with other students in the class [about DARTII]; however, the peers in my group are people working in the job place already.

It's definitely an interesting experience to take a class online and have group members who are not my own age, but I am absolutely learning a lot about the material through their input and the professor.

Since it's an online class (offered through WebCampus), it lasts the entire summer. I am sure to blog about it again at some point in the future!

Stevens has been following me everywhere!

On the train

At Work (insert generic work picture from Google image search)

I am absolutely not saying that it's a bad thing... it has just been very funny that Stevens has been "following" me!

When I was on the train on my way to work, I saw at least two other Stevens students that I recognized!
When my sister and I were food shopping in Shoprite, we saw a member from the Career Development Office also food shopping!
When I was at work, multiple Stevens references came up... including learning about Henry Gantt (who graduated from Stevens and developed the Gantt Chart that we use here a lot in Design) and Frederick Winslow Taylor (who I learned about in Engineering Management who is known as the Father of Scientific Management and also a Stevens alum).

Hey.... at least I can't say that I don't see Stevens get represented enough! haha
But really, this is why I love it here. No matter where I go, I always seem to find something or someone that links back here.

Armed and Ready with my Whistle

My sister and I are certified USA Field Hockey Officials... and this past weekend we officiated the USA Futures Field Hockey Regional Tournament in New Jersey.

This tournament is the culmination of the Futures Program (a program that my sister and I competed in high school). In essence, the Futures Program is a developmental program that is the pipeline to the National Team. In essence, the better and older you get, the higher in the ranks you can get.

The training builds up to this tournament. There are selectors who pick the top players from the state to represent New Jersey in the National Tournament.

Anyways, it was nice to dust off my whistle and get to watch hockey of girls who are under 16 (Saturday session) and under 19 (Sunday session).

I got to see some great hockey and it made me EVEN MORE EXCITED for our season to begin!
Despite the little bit of sunburn I got, it was definitely a successful weekend.

Trying to spread my "wisdom"

Yesterday I went back to my high school to participate in the school's first "Transition Night".
It was created for the benefit of high school seniors and their parents.

The guidance department organized this event, asking a college financial aid speaker, the school resource officers, and a panel of college students to talk about what both the students and their parents can anticipate as their college experience is about to begin. Located in the school's auditorium, there was a fairly large gathering of parents as well as parents dragging their child along for the event ha.

Right after hearing about this via email from one of my high school teachers, I jumped at the chance. There were many things I didn't expect coming into college and a lot of things I wish I had known beforehand. I think it was a great idea and am very happy I had the opportunity to participate.

The point that I stressed the most was to get involved and really take advantage of everything the school has to offer.

The Trip

Word to the wise.... be VERY cautious when driving on a road trip.

On my road trip to Texas as I mentioned in my last post... some things went awry.
Let's just say I didn't even make it to Texas. We got as far as Memphis.

I'm going to spare you the details, but I will say the trip was fun while it lasted.
Before the car broke down in Memphis, we got to see and do some pretty cool stuff!

1. We paid a visit to one of our friends in Indiana and left some artwork on his house :)

Artwork

2. I was taught how to pump gas into a car.

Gas

3. I saw how flat it is as you get to the Midwest (you can see for miles!)

Flatlands

4. I spent some time in Memphis (& went to a BBQ Festival)

No matter where we were though... we were always DUCKS!

(this was our watchful duck on the Dashboard)

Below is a picture of our journey (both the intended one and the actual one).

The Trip

Now I am back in NJ and preparing for my first week of graduate classes and my internship that starts next week!

*Fun fact- Lauren and I stick out like sore thumbs wherever we go! Almost everyone we met commented/ asked if we were twins.*

TEXAS TOMORROW!

Hello all! I am done with my finals (THANK GOODNESS!)

Now the fun begins! I am going to Texas tomorrow on a road trip with some friends.
(So you don't think I'm crazy and road trip for fun... I am going to Texas because one of my friends lives there, so we're going with her so she doesn't have to drive there alone.)

Therefore, I unfortunately can't blog in that time frame, but I will definitely take a lot of pictures to post when I return.

Midnight Breakfast & My First Final

Midnight Breakfast was WILD this semester!

To make a long story short... let's just say that I accidentally stepped on a police officer! :(
It was unintentional I swear! One of the new features of the midnight breakfast involved impairment goggles aka "beer goggles". I put on the goggles and was asked to do a variety of tasks: walk in a straight line, pick up a set of keys, balance on one leg, touch my nose, and throw a football through a hoop.
I don't remember when it was during walking in a straight line or going to pick up the keys... at some point I stepped on the officer. UGH, oops!

Attached is a picture of my sister trying to balance on one leg with the goggles on. As seen from the picture, she was quite unsuccessful.

My First Final

The reason I haven't blogged in a while is because of the hours I put into studying for my first final thsi semester. I literally spent 20 hours in the library studying for it.
The class: Mechanical Engineering Thermodynamics (sounds intense, right?!).
What we learned over the course of the semester was all about energy, work, heat transfers, and different types of systems.

OK, I'm off to study for my next final...  that's at 8am on Monday morning...

Greek Week

I have been lackluster about informing you about Greek Week! Because I was the Greek Week chair for my sorority, I helped spread the news about the events about everything going on!

If you don't know... Greek Week is a week long of events that celebrate Greek life on campus and try to promote unity between the sororities and fraternities on campus. Many schools around the country celebrate Greek Week.

Here are the list of events at Stevens:

Monday- Wing Eating Competition (yum)
Tuesday- Can Castles
Wednesday- DanceAThon
Thursday- Casino Night
Friday- Iron Chef & Chariot Races!
