At Stevens, many undergraduates get opportunities to
participate in interesting and important research.
Are you interested in developing critical skills and exploring sophisticated topics in research as early as the end of your freshman year? Stevens is definitely the place for you.
Stevens allows you to push the boundaries of your education further than the classroom, and research is a great way to accomplish this.
Each summer, for example, students in a number of research programs explore
critical areas of research, including but not limited to:
- Surgical Robotics
- Neural Tissue Engineering
- Ambient Energy Harvesting
- Housing and Student Loan Markets
- Information Flow Security for Android Apps
- Microfluidic 3D Arthritic Cartilage Tissue Modeling
- Engineering Scaffolds for Cartilage Regeneration
- Smart Sensor and Home Automation
- Recovering Phosphate and Ammonia from Wastewater
In addition, student researchers get to discuss their work and findings with the
university community at special research poster sessions in the fall.
Last week, one such student, mechanical engineering major Blaise Linn, stood before his poster enthusiastic about sharing the nature and outcomes of his unique research in acoustic sensor technologies. As part of the Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce Summer Research Institute, Blaise collaborated with an undergraduate electrical engineering student from the University of Puerto Rico and a maritime systems student from Stevens to develop a method to use passive sonar for vessel detection and characterization on our nation’s waterways.
“I was fortunate to be a mechanical engineering student pulled into this type of research,” said Blaise. “One of the most incredible things is that although we have faculty advisors, the research is ours. We worked with the data and designed and implemented a solution. We worked as a team solving a real-world problem. And we proved our hypothesis. It was all very gratifying.”
