Stevens Institute of Technology was awarded the responsibility of leading research and education in port security. This honor was the result of the impressive strength of Stevens and its university and industry partners, which include MIT, Rutgers University, the University of Miami, the University of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Monmouth University, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. The focus areas of the center's research include maritime domain awareness; space-based wide area surveillance; vessel detection, tracking, and monitoring; High Frequency Frequency radar for multiple applications; search and rescue; environmental monitoring; human and organizational factors influencing Marine Transportation System (MTS) security and coastal safety; resiliency; and MTS recovery and continuity of operations.

Stevens selected as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research

Stevens is one of 23 research centers designated by the NSA and DHS

Stevens Institute of Technology has been selected by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as one of the first 23 National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research (CAE-R). Stevens will hold this designation from 2008 to 2013. Universities designated as Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance (IA) Education and Centers of Academic Excellence in IA Research are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants through both the Federal and Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Programs. This designation will also lend itself to numerous opportunities for advanced research in the field, and is a testament to the outstanding IA research already being conducted here at Stevens.

Student Profile: David Barker, B.S. Computer Science ‘08

Dave Barker is a 5/5 senior, a term used by many students at Stevens Institute of Technology, denoting participation in the cooperative education program. Dave chose to do a five-year college plan, alternating semesters of study with real-world paid work experience. Roughly 600 students are currently enrolled in Stevens’ co-op program, meaning about 40 percent of the undergraduate student body opt to do this five year combination of classes and corporate experience, with 150 employers to choose from.

“It’s really the co-op program that brought me here to Stevens, even more so than its academic reputation,” says Dave. It was the overall strength in career development that caught his attention as a high school senior and that of his guidance counselors at Roselle Catholic in Roselle, N.J. Five years later, Dave feels he got what he expected – a well established program that has “really, really strong ties with many industries that makes the process easy for students.”

Stevens Student Turns Gaming Hobby into a Business

With his new Web site ProHaloLeague.com and organized LAN (local area network) tournaments, Ryan Gellis, 17, hopes to move gaming from leisure to outright competition.

"The kids can play in teams with each other and can play against each other from all over the country in the comfort of their own home," said Gellis, a freshman at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken. "We have people as far as California participate in the tournaments."

A Spirit of Collaboration

Stevens Institute of Technology truly lives at the crossroads of inspired collaboration, where artists and researchers meet to make the world a better, and more beautiful, place. Stevens faculty break down disciplinary walls to make way for new discoveries that bridge the artistic and the scientific.

A collaboration between Dr. H. Quynh Dinh, Department of Computer Science, and artist Ebon Fisher, Department of Art, Music, and Technology, explores "synergies between creativity and information technology, science, engineering, and design research" was recently funded by the National Science Foundation.  The project is titled "A 'Transderivational' Search Engine for Creative Analogy Generation in Mixed-Media Design." Dr. Dilhan Kilyan, Director of the Highly Filled Materials Institute in Stevens' Department of Chemical, Biomedical and Materials Engineering, is working with artist Jackie Brookner, creator of public art projects called biosculptures, "living sculptures that use the capacity of carefully chosen plants to clean and filter water."  Together, they will create new material for Brookner’s moss-covered sculptures, and Dilhan will have invented a new plastic that could be utilized for urban water runoff.
