Stevens students – with students from Parsons The New School for Design, and Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy – are part of Empowerhouse, a team that is designing and building a net-zero energy home (pictured above), set to be a new vision for affordable housing.
The home was created as part of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, which challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of this international competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
The homes are now displayed for public and competition viewing on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from September 23-October 2, 2011. The Empowerhouse home is a front-runner in innovation beyond the competition. After the Solar Decathlon, the house will be resituated in the Deanwood neighborhood of D.C. where it will become home to a family working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C., and the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development.
